Q

On a hot day we swet and lose water more rapidly.

How do we respond to maintain the water balance in the body?

A
  1. The volume of water in the urine decreases.

2. We drink and eat more to take in more water.

Q

On a hot sunny day, man A sat in the shade drinking beer, while man B went jogging outside.

How would the (a) volume and (b) concentration of urine produced by man B compare with man A?

A

a) The volume of urine produced by man B would be lower.
but. ..
b) The concentration of urine produced by man B would be higher.

Q

In a class, the students’ body temperatures are recorded as follows:

  1. 8°C - 5 students
  2. 9°C - 3 students
  3. 0°C - 6 students
  4. 1°C - 7 students
  5. 2°C - 3 students

Explain why the mean temperature is 37°C.

A

Multiply temperature by the number of students at that temperature and add them up. Then divide by the total number of students.

(36. 8×5) + (36.9×3) +
(37. 0×6) + (37.1×7) + (37.2×3) = 888

888 / 24 = 37

[Not simply add 36.8 + 36.9 + etc then divide 5]

Q

After taking some types of recreational drugs, the kidneys produce very little urine.

What happens to the body cells if the kidneys produce very little urine?

A

The blood’s water content gets too high so the body cells swell as they absorb too much water. This can damage cells and even lead to death.
