B12- Homeostasis Flashcards
What is the function of the nervous system?
Enables organisms to react to their surroundings and coordinate behaviour
What are the two parts of the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
Why are reflexes rapid?
They do not involve the conscious part of the brain
Why are reflex actions important?
For survival and to prevent damage
Give the nervous pathway
Stimulus receptor coordinator effector response
What is a stimulus
A change in the internal or external environment
What is a synapse?
A junction between two neurones
What is the function of neurones?
Carry electrical impulses around the body
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment
Why is homeostasis important?
Maintains optimal conditions for enzymes, organs and cells
What does homeostasis control?
Body temperature, water levels and blood glucose concentration
What do all control systems include?
Receptors, coordinations and effectors
What are the three coordination centres
Pancreas, brain, spinal cord
What are two types of effector?
Muscles and glands
What happens at a synapse? (4)
1- impulse travels along the axon
2- nerve ending releases neurotransmitter
3- diffuses across the synapse
4- binds to receptors and converts back
