B.1.1 Introduction To Biological Molecules Flashcards
What are the three types of bonding between atoms?
Covalent, Ionic and Hydrogen
What is Covalent Bonding?
When atoms share a pair of electrons in their outer shell
What is Ionic Bonding?
Ions with different charges attract one another. The electrostatic attraction is known as an ionic bond
What is hydrogen bonding?
The electrons within a molecule are not evenly distributed but tend to spend more time at one position.
What does polarised mean?
When a molecule has an uneven distribute of charge.
What are polymers?
Long chains of monomer sub-units
What is the formation of polymers called
Polymerisation
What are reactions that produce water called?
Condensation reactions
How can polymers be broken down?
Hydrolysis
What is metabolism?
All the chemical processes that take place in living organisms
What is a molar solution?
A solution that contains one mole of solute in each litre of solution
