B1.1 Cell Biology Flashcards
Which cells are eukaryotic?
Animal and plant cells( both contain nucleus which contains DNA)
What cells are prokaryotes?
Bacterial cells
Define eukaryotic cells
Contain their genetic material (dna) enclosed in a nucleus.
Define prokaryotic cells
The genetic material (dna) is NOT enclosed in a nucleus (lack a nucleus/don’t have)
Are prokaryotic cells smaller or bigger than eukaryotic cells
Smaller
What do both animal and plant cells contain
A nucleus
What is the job of the nucleus (animal and plant)
To enclose the genetic material
What is cytoplasm (animal and plant)
Watery solution where chemical reactions take place.
What is the job of the cell membrane? (Animal and plant)
Controls the molecules which can enter and leave the cell
What is mitochondria? (animal and plant)
Where aerobic respiration takes place
What are ribosomes? (Animal and plant)
Sites of protein synthesis
Are mitochondria and ribosomes visible in pictures
No
What is the job of the cell wall (plant cells)
Made from cellulose this strengthens the cell
What is the permanent vacuole(plant cell)
Filled with a fluid called cell sap. The vacuole helps give the plant cell its shape.
What is the chloroplasts jobs( plant cells)
Contain chlorophyll and are the sites of photynthesis
