B11 Flashcards
How long is menstrual cycle
28 days
Where is FSH and LH made
Pituitry gland
Where is oestrogen and progesterone made
Ovaries
What is the order
FSH
Oestrogen
LH
Progesterone
Main events in cycle and what they do
MENSTRUATION= uterus linning breaks down, blood and cells are lost. Lasts from day 1-6 PROLIFERATION= repair of the lining. Proliferation starts from day 7-13 OVULATION= release of an egg from the ovary. Always happens on day 14. Release of the egg
What happens between day 1-6 (menstruation)
Ovaries-follicles immature
Uterus-uterus lining breaks
Hormone levels-pituatry gland releases FSH
What does FSH do
It matures and develops eggs in ovaries
Days 6-13 (proliferation)
Ovaries-eggs begin to develop
Uterus-uterus lining repairs
What does oestrogen do
Stops FSH
Starts LH release
Uterus lining thickens
Day 14 (ovulation)
Ovaries-follicle releases egg
Uterus-uterus lining remains thick
High Lh level cause follicle to burst and releases egg into oviduct
LH starts releasing Progesterone
Progesterone maintains thick uterus lining
What does thick lining do
Provides nutrients and oxygen to egg
LH on graph
On day 14 it has high amounts. Else there is veey little amount
Oestrogen on graph
Increases on day 10 (proliferation)
Causes reperation of lining
Develops egg
What happens after day 14
Progesterone increases because it wants preganancy. It mantains thick uterus lining hoping for fertilisation.
