B.10 Selective Breeding Flashcards
What is yield?
The amount of useful plant part on a single plant.
What is a species?
A group of organism with similar traits that can reproduce with each other.
What is variety?
Subset of species (ex.Lettuce-Romane and iceburg)
What are traits?
Things that make a plant different from varieties of its species.
What is selective breeding?
Selecting plants with specific traits and reproducing them.
What are some examples of things humans do to increase plant yield?
Using greenhouses, using pesticides, irrigation and using fertilizers.
What are potential negatives of selective breeding?
-Heightens the risk of desease (inbreeding=desease)
-Must rebuild your crop
-Reduces gene pool
-Could accidently produce a super weed
What is genetic engineering?
Adding genes(Materials in a cell for specific traits) to an organism to change its traits.
