What are the four causes of stress?

What are daily hassles?
They are minor irritations that may occur in a day although they are not large scale they may disrupt our mood
Examples: Losing your key
How do you measure daily hassles?
-Using the Hassles scale
How are daily hassles and stress linked?
-Daily hassles threaten a persons health due to their continuity
-Hassles are stressful because we experience them directly
What are life events?
- They are significant changes in a persons life which disrupts their normal routine
-they lead to psychological adjustments to cope with the event - They can be both positive and negative
- An example may be death or pregnancy
How do you measure life events?
- Social readjustment rating scale (SRRS)
How are life events and stress linked?
- Life events can take a large psychological toll on a person
- It all depends on the individuals perceived ability to cope
-They are stressful because the individual has to use psychology energy to cope with this change
What are the two types of conflict an individual may face in the workplace?
- Intra-role conflict
- Inter-role conflict
Evaluation PRACTICAL USES (strength) of daily hassles and life events
-they allow people to assess their own life events and hassles which encourage openness and honesty instead of being face to face with a person they don’t know

What is adrenaline?
It is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands as part of the body’s acute (immediate) stress response (fight or flight)
What are the 3 states of the stress response?
Stage 1- alarm reaction which is when the threat is recognised, the hypothalamus in the brain triggers the production of adrenaline for fight or flight
Stage 2- resistance which is when the threat ends the body functions like normal but if the stressor continues the immune system becomes less effective
Stage 3- exhaustion
What two approaches can explain smoking ?
Learning approach and Cognitive approach
Why might people drink using the cognitive approach?
They may be a form of self soothing for past trauma
