B1 Osmosis in animal cells Flashcards
Osmosis
The movement of water from from an area of high to low concentration through partially permeable membrane
If the cell is Isotonic
Concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is THE SAME AS the internal concentration
If the cell is Hypertonic (too concentrated)
Concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is HIGHER than the internal concentration
If the cell is Hypotonic (too dilute)
Concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is LOWER than the internal concentration
Too dilute
Cell will gain water by osmosis and will swell and may burst (hypotonic)
Too concentrated
The cell will lose water by osmosis, will shrivel up and cannot survive (hypertonic)
