- OREGON TREATY 1846= US gains lands whihc becomes state of oregon- protested by many As who wanted the whole territory

- anxious to annex it from Spain

- Roads- want a national road, as others resp of state govs & private enterprise
- CANALS- success of ERIE CANAL had led to a canal-building BOOM
Steamboats- Mississippi river- trade can go both ways

- beyond the mississippi
- largely devoid of white settlers

- E & W rivalry- Westren ideals of honesty & simplicity- opposed to E’s @ prententions of gentility’- soft lifestyles/ E thought W uncouth
- issue of whether to allow slavery
- was encourgaed by fed gov but not fully organised or planned- adds to unclear future

how did land prices change?
- late 1700s, land too expensive for most would-be settlers
- so due to popular pressure, congress reduced the minimum amount required to be sold for land; down to 40 acres by 1830s; and minimum price per acre steadily fell to abt a dollar an acre- stops just being elites/ rich ppl
how did the louisiana purchase expand usa?-
- nearly doubled the national territory
- monroe negotiated it from france for $15mil, the large amount embarassing jefforson
