B1 - Location, Anatomy And Function Of Cardiovascular Componets Flashcards
What are the 4 components of blood?
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Plasma
Platelets
What is the function of red blood cells?
Red blood cells contain haemoglobin which binds to oxygen and is transported to the working muscles.
What is the function of white blood cells?
White blood cells destroy bacteria and help to fight infection.
What is the function of plasma?
Plasma is the liquid that transports slats, glucose, nutrients, amino acids, etc. around the body.
What is the function of platelets?
Platelets prevent blood loss by clotting the blood and forming scabs.
What is another name for red blood cells?
Erythrocytes
What is another term for white blood cells?
Lymphocytes
What are the 3 main types of blood vessels?
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
What are the 3 main types of blood vessels?
Arteries
Veins
Capillaries
What are the two smaller connective blood vessels?
Arterioles and Venules
What is the function of the arteries?
The function of the arteries is to take blood away from the heart.
What are the properties of an artery and why?
They have thick muscular walls and a small lumen. This is so they can transport large amounts of blood and withstand the high pressure as it is transported around the whole body. They also have no valves.
What are the properties of a vein and why?
Veins have thin muscular walls and a wide lumen. They have a low blood pressure and valves to prevent back flow.
What are the functions of the veins?
The function of a vein is to take blood into the heart.
What is the septum?
The septum separates the ventricles and allows for proper blood flow through the heart. It keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate.
What are the chordae tendineae?
This connective fibrous tissue holds the valves in place. Also known as the heart strings.
What are the coronary arteries?
These supply oxygenated blood and nutrients to the heart.
What are the walls of the heart made from?
They are made from cardiac muscle, also known as myocardium
What are 2 adaptations of the heart?
- the left ventricle is thicker as the muscle needs to be strong to pump the blood around the body
- it has valves to prevent back flow
What is pulmonary circulation?
Heart - lungs - heart
What is systemic circulation?
Heart - body - heart
