B1 : Characteristics of living organisms Flashcards
Movement
An action by an organism or part of an organism causing a change of position or place
Living things do this to get from one place to another
Plants - seed dispersal
Animals - muscles/bone joints
Respiration
The chemical reactions in cells that break down nutrient molecules and release energy for metabolism
Living things use oxygen to release energy from food
Plants - Release oxygen and intakes carbon dioxide
Animals - Takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide
All characteristics of living organisms
Movement Respiration Sensitivity Growth Reproduction Excretion Nutrition
Sensitivity
The ability to detect or sense stimuli in the internal or external environment and to make appropriate responses
Living things to respond to their environment and react
Plants - Phototropism (sunflower following the sun)
Animals - Changes in temperature
Growth
A permanent increase in size and dry mass by an increase in cell number or cell size of both
Living things permanently increase in size
Plants - height, root length, number of petals etc
Animals - Hair growth, height, etc
Reproduction
The processes that make more of the same kind of organism
The production of more of the same organism
Plant - Pollination
Animal - Sexual reproduction, sperm, egg, offspring
Excretion
Removal from organisms of the waste products of metabolism
Living things remove waste products of metabolism
Plants - Release oxygen
Animals - Excretes out feaces
Nutrition
Taking in of materials for energy, growth, and development
Living things take in materials to provide energy and growth
Plant - Absorbs water and minerals from the soil and photosynthesis
Animals - Intakes food
