We need a balanced diet to keep us healthy. Explain the ways in which an unbalanced diet can affect the body.
- balanced diet contains all the correct nutrients in the correct amounts
- balanced diet has the correct amount of energy
- too much energy leads to mass/weight increase e.g. Too much fat
- if activity increased use of energy increases
- too little energy leads to mass decrease- can lead to anorexia
- lack of vitamins leads to deficiency
- too much carbohydrate/ sugar/ overweight can lead to type 2 diabetes and other diseases
What is metabolic rate?
Metabolic rate is the rate of chemical reactions in cells
What factors can change a persons metabolic rate?
The proportion of fat to muscle and inherited factors
Polio
It is difficult to kill the polio virus inside the body because the virus lives inside cells. The vaccine contains a inactive form of the polio virus. Te vaccine simulates the white blood cells to produce antibodies which destroy the virus.
How many years did it take for the number of cases of polio to fall to zero?

There have been no cases of polio in the UK for many years. But children are still vaccinated against the disease. Suggest one reason for this.
