B1- cell biology Flashcards
What type of cell is bacteria?
Prokaryotic
Name 5 subcellular structures that both are in animal and plant cells
Nucleus Cell membrane Mitochondria Ribosomes Cytoplasm
What 3 things do plant cells have that animal don’t?
Cell wall
Chloroplasts
Vacuole
Where is genetic material found in
Animal cell
Bacteria cell
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
What is a higher resolution light or electron microscope?
Electron
What is cell differentiation?
When cells have changed to become specialised
Give 2 ways a sperm cell us adapted to swim to the egg.
Tail
Loads of mitochondria which give energy
What are chromosomes?
Coiled up DNA
What is the cell cycle?
A cell splitting to become 2 cells
What do multicellular organisms use mitosis for ?
To grow and develop
Give one way that embryonic stem cells could be used to cure disease?
They can replace faulty cells in sick people.
Eg. Insulin-producing cells for people with diabetes
Why might some people be against using human embryos in stem cell research?
Each embryo could be a human life
What is diffusion?
Movement of particles from where there are lots of them to where there are fewer of them
High ~> low concentration
How does temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
The higher temperature the faster they diffuse
What type of molecules move by osmosis?
Water
