B1 - Cell Biology Flashcards
What does the ribosomes do?
Where proteins are made in the cell
What does the nucleus do?
Contains genetic material that controls activities of the cell
What does mitochondria do?
Where aerobic respiration happens
What does cell membrane do?
Holds cell together and controls what goes in and out of
What does cytoplasm do?
Where chemical reactions happen
What does cell wall do?
Made of cellulose and supports the cell and strengthens it.
What does vacuole do?
Contains cell sap
What does chloroplasts do?
Where photosynthesis occurs
What is equation for magnification?
Image size/real size
How do electron microscopes differ to light microscopes?
Higher magnification, higher resolution, can see smaller things in much more detail.
What are sperm cells specialised for?
Reproduction
What are nerve cells specialised for?
Rapid signalling
What are muscle cells specialised for?
Contraction
What are root hair cells specialised for?
Absorbing water and minerals
What are phloem and xylem specialised for?
Transporting substances
What is diffusion?
Spreading out of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
What is osmosis?
Movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from a region of higher water concentration to a lower.
What is active transport?
The movement of substances against their concentration gradient.
Why is active transport important?
Stops us from starving
