B1 Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell
A cell with a nucleus
What is a nucleus
Contains the genetic material and controls the activities of the cell
What happens in the cytoplasm
Where most of the chemical reactions happen
What are the functions of ribosomes
They synthesise proteins
What happens in the mitochondria
Most of the reactions of aerobic respiration happen to release energy
What is the function of the cell membrane
Controls what enters and leaves the cell
Which structures makes plant cells unique
Cell wall made of cellulose, a permanent vacuole containing cell sap, and chloroplasts which contain chlorophyll and absorb light needed for photosynthesis
What is the structure of bacterial cells
Bacterial cells contain cytoplasm and a cell membrane surrounded by a cell wall. The genetic material is not enclosed in a nucleus. It is a single DNA loop and there may be one or more small rings of DNA called plasmids
What are prokaryotic cells
Cells which don’t contain a nucleus. Bacterial cells are prokaryotic cells, which are much smaller than eukaryotic cells.
How has microscopy developed
Microscopy techniques have developed over time due to improving technology, and that electron microscopes can produce images of higher magnification and higher resolution than light microscopes
