B???: Required Practicals WIP Flashcards
Microscopy:
What is the equipment involved with the microscopy practical?
\+ A light microscope \+ An organic sample (Onion epidermis or Human cheek cells) \+ A slide \+ A stain (Iodine) \+ A coverslip
Microscopy:
How do you prepare a slide?
- Remove a cell thick layer of a sample
- Place it on a slide
- Add a stain such as iodine (two drops). Sometimes a drop of distilled water is added as well
- Place the coverslip over the sample
> < Microscopy:
How do you use a light microscope to observe a specimen?
- Place the sample slide on the stage
- Set it to the lowest objective lens
- Use the coarse focus knob to bring the sample into rough focus
- Use the fine focus knob to make the sample clear
Microscopy:
What is the equation of magnification, as well as the equation for total microscope magnification?
Equation of Magnification:
Image size = Actual Size x Magnification
Equation for total microscope magnification:
Eyepiece magnification x Objective lens magnification = Total magnification
> < -O- Microbiology:
What is the equipment involved in the microbiology practical?
\+ A Petri dish \+ A culture medium (Agar Jelly) \+ An inoculating loop \+ Paper disks \+ A range of antibiotics or disinfectants \+
> < -O- Microbiology:
How do you prepare an uncontaminated culture?
-O- Microbiology:
What is the methodology of investigating the effects of certain antibiotics & antiseptics on bacterial growth?
-O- Microbiology:
What is the inhibition zone, and how is it measured?
Osmosis:
What is the equipment used in the Osmosis practical?
\+ A Sample (Tubers or bulbs) \+ A Cork Borer \+ A ruler or measuring apparatus \+ A knife \+ A high-resolution, calibrated set of scales \+ A test tube rack \+ A set of test tubes \+ Varying solutions of water & sugar/salt (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 & 1 mol/dm3) \+ Dry paper towels
Osmosis:
What is the methodology of the Osmosis practical?
Osmosis:
How can the results of the Osmosis practical be graphed, and what do they tell us?
Enzymes:
What is the equipment involved with the enzyme practicals?
Enzymes:
What is the methodology of the enzyme practical?
Enzymes:
What do the results of the enzyme practical tell us, and how can they be graphed?
Food tests:
What are the four tests for food molecules?
