B+C Flashcards
Oestrus
The time in a female reproductive cycle when they are fertile and ready to mate or “on heat”.
Hyperactivity
Animals display behaviours similar to ADHD in humans.
Excessive inactivity
Abnormal inactivity. Species specific.
Displacement behaviour
Can be a signifier of the stress level of an animal.
Stereotypic behaviour
The reception of movement or action for no particular reason.
Heredity
The passing on of traits from parent to offspring.
Innate behaviour
A behaviour that an animal has not learned.
Fixed action patterns
Behaviours that are hard-wired into animals. Requires some external stimulus. Behaviour tends to continue on through a sequence of “action patterns”.
Circadian rhythms
An internal clock that regulates bodily processes.
Infraspecific communication
Between same species.
Interspecific communication
Between different species.
Methods of communication
- Vision.
- Hearing.
- Chemical.
- Touch.
Pheromone
Chemical given off by an animal that other animals can detect through smells.
Linear hierarchy
A simple ladder or ranking of dominance relationships between animals.
Complex hierarchy
A non-linear set of dominance relationships between three or more animals.
