AWS Regions
A
- Physical location in the world with multiple availability zones (AKA data centers)
- Physically isolated from every other region in terms of location, power, water supply
- Each region has AT LEAST two data centers
- Largest region is US-EAST
- Not all services are available in all regions
- US-EAST-1 is the region where billing information is available

AWS Availability zones
A
- A datacenter owned and operated by AWS in which AWS services run
- Each region has at least two AZs
- Represented by a region code, followed by a letter identifier. Example: “US-EAST-1a”
- < 10 ms latency between AZs

AWS Edge location
A
- A datacenter owned by a trusted partner of AWS
- DIRECT CONNECTION to AWS network
- Serve requests for Cloudfront, Route 53, S3 transfer acceleration, and API Gateway automatically.
- Allows low latency no matter where the end user is geographically located.

GovCloud regions
A
- Host sensitive controlled unclassified information and other regulated workloads
- Only operated by US citizens on US soil
- Only accessible to US entities and account holders who pass a screening process
