AWA Flashcards
AWA Steps
1) take argument apart - 2 mins
2) select points (what kind of flaws, exs) - 5 mins
3) organize using template - 1 min
4) write - 20 mins
5) proofread (be concise, forceful, correct, keywords) - 2 mins
AWA Template
Paragraph 1: show you understand argument and put into own words
Paragraph 2: point out flaw 1 and explain why questionable (use hypothetical)
Paragraph 3: point out flaw 2 and explain why questionable (use hypothetical)
(use not only x but also y for listing flaws)
Paragraph 4: how to remedy problem –> evidence
Paragraph 5: conclusion (sound like an executive) “it would be imprudent…”
AWA Classic Flaws
1) plan, proposal, prediction: conclusion is p/p/p, lacks sufficient evidence, assumes plan will work
2) representativeness - assumes sample is representative, lacks sufficient evidence
3) causality - cause and effect, x –> y, assumes no other factors cause y but x, that y was not the cause of x, or the apparent relationship between x and y is not just a coincidence, lacks evidence
