Avoid Repetition of Noun and Verb Flashcards
RULE ; There are two ways of using “EN”, what is the rule with Il y a so it becomes; Il y EN a:
IL Y EN A
Il y en a
Using “en” means you don’t need to repeat the verb or noun in the question, so “en” essentially would become that/there/some/it/them….. depending on the context.
EXAMPLES:
There is snow everywhere /
Il y a de la neige partout
There is some on the mountains /
Il y en a sur les montagnes
There is some in fields /
Il y en a dans les champs
There is a little on the trees /
Il y en a un peu sur les arbres
RULE ; There are two ways of using “EN” what is the rule with Je so it becomes; J’en:
J’EN
J’en
(though it may be useable with Tu etc. but you haven’t go at that far yet.)
Using “en” means you don’t need to repeat the verb or noun in the question, so “en” essentially would become that/there/some/it/them…… depending on the context.

RULE about describing quantities and Il y a?
When say for example:
“There are three” or “There is a lot”
You would have thought “Il y a” would be sufficient followed by “Trois / beaucoup” respectively.
ACTUALLY you must say:
Il y EN a beaucoup
and
Il y EN a trois
Il y EN a beaucoup
and
Il y EN a trois
Why is the EN Necessary
Because it replaces the noun and indicates it:
Il y EN a beaucoup -
There is a lot (of that)
Il y EN a trois -
There are three (of them)
