Avoid Illusions of Knowing Flashcards
What is Daniel Kahneman’s “System 1” analytic system?
The unconscious, intuitive, and immediate form of thinking. Automatic and deeply influential. Susceptible to illusion.
What is Daniel Kahneman’s “System 2” analytic system?
The slower thinking process that considers choices, makes decisions, and exerts self-control. Checks impulses, plans ahead, thinks through implications of choices.
How does emotion affect memory?
We remember those elements of events that have greatest emotional significance for us and we fill in the gaps with details of our own that are consistent with our narrative but may be wrong.
What is the curse of knowledge?
Our tendency to underestimate how long it will take another person to learn something new or perform a task that we have already mastered.
The better you know something, the more difficult it becomes to teach it.
What is fluency illusion?
It is the illusion of mastery produced by familiarity with a text.
Reading a clear explanation might lead the reader to believe that the concept is simple and perhaps to believe that she “already knew that.”
If I answer a question correctly a few times, should I drop it from my testing regime?
NO! If it’s important it needs to be practiced, and practiced again.
