Aviation History, Common Terms, and FAA Codes Flashcards
FSDO
Flight Standards District Office:
FAA has 80 locations
-Accident investigation
-Enforcement of aviation regulations
-Certification and surveillance of air carriers, air operators, flight schools/training centers, and airmen including pilots and flight instructors
-Staffed by Aviation Safety Inspectors
ASI
Aviation Safety Inspectors
- enforce safety regulations and standards for production, operation, maintenance, and/or modification of aircraft used in civil aviation
-also specialize in conducting inspections of various aspects of aviation systems, such as aircraft and parts manufacturing, aircraft operation, airworthiness, and cabin safety
AIM
Aeronautical Information Manual
Airplane
Engine-driven fixed-wing aircraft heavier than air, that is supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of air against its wings
Glider
a heavier-than-air aircraft that is supported in flight by the dynamic reaction of air against its lifting surfaces and whose free flight does not depend principally on an engine
lighter-than-air aircraft
an aircraft that can rise and remain suspended by using contained gas weighing less than the air that is displaced by the gas
ie. airship - an engine- driven lighter-than-air aircraft that can be steered
- balloon - a lighter-than - air aircraft that is not engine driven, and that sustains flight through the use of either gas buoyancy or an airborne heater
large aircraft
more than 12,500 lbs, maximum certificated takeoff weight
small aircraft
aircraft of 12,500 lbs or less
VFR
visual flight rules
- set of regulations under which a pilot operates an aircraft in weather conditions generally clear enough to allow the pilot to see where the aircraft is going
ADM
Aeronautical Decision-Making
Six Steps for good decision making
- identify personal attitudes hazardous to safe flight
- learning behavior modification techniques
- learning how to recognize and cope with stress
- developing risk assessment skills
- using all resources
- evaluating the effectiveness of one’s ADM skills
Title 49
United States Code requiring registration of US civil aircraft as a prerequisite to operation
CFR
Code of Federal Regulations
Title 14
Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) laws and regulations pertaining to aeronautics, air transportation and aviation
