Aviation Employment Considerations Flashcards
6 Functions of Marine Aviation
Offensive Air Support Anti Air Warfare Assault Support Air Reconnaissance Electronic Warfare Control of Aircraft and Missles
Definition of OAS
those air operations conducted against enemy instllations, facilities, and personnel to directly assist the attainment of MAGTF objectives by the destruction of enemy resources or the isolation of his military force
OAS function
Combined arms, through destruction or neutralization
Destruction
destroy enemy forces, equipment, supplies and installations
Neutralization
renders areas, weapons, or enemy forces ineffective for a specified time
OAS categories
Deep Air Support
Close Air Support
Deep Air Support
can be conducted in the form of air interdiction, armed reconnaissance, or strike coordination and reconnaissance
Air Interdiction
air operations conducted to destroy, neutralize, or delay the enemy’s military potential before it can be brought to bear effectively against friendly forces
Armed Reconnaissance
Locating and attacking targets of opportunity
Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance
mission flown for the purpose of acquiring and reporting deep air support targets and coordinating armed reconnaissance or air interdiction missions upon those targets and coordinating armed reconnaissance or air interdiction missions upon those targets
Close Air Support
air action against hostile targets which are in close promixity to friendly forces and which require detailed integration of each air mission with the fire and movement of those forces
2 types of close air
preplaned, immediate missions
Antiair warfare
action that is required to destoy or redut to an acceptable level the enemy air and missle threat
2 types of AAW
Offensive AAW and Air Defense
OAAW three specific areas
Preemptive measures - allow air and ground operations to proceed without prohibitive interference
suppression of enemy air defenses- gain access to a defined zone of airspace that will allow magtf operations to proceed
local air superiority measures-prevent the enemy’s residual air threat
2 categories of air defense
active air defense
passive air defense
Assault Support defined
provides the MAGTF commander the ability to concentrate his strength against selected enemy weaknesses using speed and surprise.
Categories of Assault Support
Combat Assault transport Air Delivery Aerial Refueling Air evacuation Tactical Recovery of aircraft and personnel Air logistical support Battlefield illumination
Air Reconnaissance
reduce the commanders unknown risks
2 categories of air reconnaissance
strategic
tactical
Types of reconnaissance
visual
multi-sensor imagery
electronic

Control of Aircraft and Missiles
coordinated employment, communications, procedures, and personnel in order to enable the ACE commander to plan, direct, and control the efforts of the ACE to support the MAGTF.
