Avian Diseases Flashcards
What are some causes of avian Chlamydiosis? What birds is it most common in?
stress. Most common in newly acquired birds?
What are the clinical signs of avian Chlamydiosis?
Depression, lethargy, anorexia, dyspnea, nasal/ocular discharge, conjunctivitis, green urates
How do you diagnose avian Chlamydiosis?
Radiographs (hepatomegaly or splenomegaly)
Chlamydia panel
What tests are included in a Chlamydiosis panel?
ELISA, PCR, aspirate/biopsy, elementary body assay (EBA)
What is the minimum amount of tests needed in an avian Chlamydiosis panel to confirm the disease?
At least 3 tests
How do you treat avian Chlamydiosis?
Doxycycline for 45 days
How is avian pox transmitted? What is the incubation period?
Mosquito or broken skin
10-14 days incubation period
What are the clinical signs of avian pox?
Blepharitis, ocular discharge, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, raised papule
What are the two types of avian pox?
Dry pox: cutaneous papular lesions
Wet pox: mucosal lesions of oropharynx
How do you diagnose avian pox?
Clinical signs and histology
What is the treatment for avian pox?
Supportive care
What virus is most common in immature psittacine birds?
Polyoma virus
T/F polyoma virus has a good prognosis
FALSE. 27-41% mortality rate
What are the clinical signs of polyoma virus?
SUBCUTANEOUS HEMORRHAGES. Dyspnea, anorexia, depression, delayed crop emptying
How is polyoma virus transmitted?
Excretions and secretions (especially in urine)
What are the clinical signs of proventricular dilation disease?
Chronic weight loss, regurg, delayed crop emptying, poss neurological signs, inflammation of nerves that innervate GI tract
How do you diagnose PDD?
Radiographs to look for enlarged proventriculus
Crop biopsy
How do you treat psittacine beak and feather disease?
PCR or feather follicle biopsy
What are the clinical signs or Psittacine beak and feather disease?
Dystrophy of feathers, progressively worse over time. Retained feather sheaths, curled feathers
T/F Psittacine beak and feather disease is fatal
TRUE. Can live for years but always eventually fatal
What disease causes wart like GI/Cloacal lesions in birds?
Papillomatosis (herpes 3)
Which birds most commonly get papillomatosis?
Amazons & macaws
What causes aspergillosis in birds?
Immunosupporessed, stressed, hypovitaminosis A, inhalation of spores
What type of disease is aspergillosis?
Fungal
