Avian pox
transmitted by blood feeding insects
- cutaneous form has nodules on non feathered areas
- diptheric form has raised plaques in oral and resp tract
Duck plague
- bloody discharge from nares, mouth, vent, and a prolapsed phallus
- survivors are lifetime carriers and shed virus
- prevent by destruction of flocks and vaccine for domestic ducks
Avian influenza
A highly contagious orthomyxovirus
- HPAI is OIE reportable
- clinical signs of HPAI include depression, decreased egg production, coughing, sneezing, cyanosis of head, wattles, comb, ecchymosis of legs and feet, CNS signs
- high fatality
- Dx: serology and virus isolation
West Nile Virus
mosquitos
- corvids + other avian species
- clinical signs of fever, ataxia, incoordination, paresis, paralysis , death
- Dx: serology, pcr, virus isolation
- horses and people are dead end hosts
Avian Cholera
P. Multocida
- associated with water birds and winter
- lesions of hemorrhage, multifocal necrosis, copper colored liver
- dispose and incineration of infx carcasses
Avian tuberculosis
Mycobacterium avium
- muscle atrophy + multifocal granulomatous nodules in liver, spleen, intestines, lung, air sacs, gonads
- Dx: PCR, culture, histo
Aspergillosis
aspergillosis fumigatus
- wheezing or coughing, sniff when they try to breath
- white, yellow, green nodules or plaques in the trachea, air sacs, lungs
- dx: fungal culture
Avian Botulism
- bird ingests maggots with the toxin
- limber neck
- maggots in the ventriculus of water fowl
- remove/dispose contaminated carcasses
Lead poisoning
- ingestion of lead shot carcass
- green stained vent, faint honk
- dx: blood and tx with chelation
avian vacuolar myelinopathy
unknown agent, uncoordinated flight and swimming leading to death. Vacuolation of white matter of the brain
