Manner of Death
The circumstances that result in death (unnatural or natural)
Cause of death
The specific injury, trauma, or disease that caused the death (example: gunshot wound)
Mechanism of Death
What happens inside the body to result in death (example: extreme loss of blood)
External Exam
A description of the body is recorded, measured, and weighed (hair and eye color, sex, etc.) (STEP 1)
Internal Exam
First, cut from the shoulder to the center. “Y incision”. Organs are first examined in place then taken out and weighed. (STEP 2)
Identification
Tattoos, birthmarks, and scars, were all noted. IDs, documents, and friends/ relative’s notes are also noted (STEP 3)
Sample Collection
Samples of blood, urine and tissues are collected to be sent to labs (STEP 4)
Examination of the brain
Brain is weighed and examined (STEP 5)
Stomach content
Stomach content examined. May find pills, etc. It can also help find the time of death (STEP 6)
