Autonomics I/II Flashcards
T1-L2
Sympathetics
Parasympathetic contributions…
III, VII, IX, X, S2-S4
What’s behind the vagus?
Follow the bloodvessels, behind vagus: sympathetic chain ganglion
Do preganglionic neurons use ventral or dorsal roots?
Ventral (because they’re motor)
For symp: preganglionic fibers
short, myelinated
Parasymp: preganglionic fibers…
long, unmyelinated
Vasomotor tone is done by
sympathetic
Peripheral ganglia are close to the target organ
parasympathetic
Pre and post both release Ach
parasympathetic
Postganglionic releases NE
sympathetic
Otic ganglion is para or symp?
para
Erection
parasymp (point)
ejaculation
symp (shoot)
Is L3 symp?
No. L2 is the last sympathetic going inferiorly
unpaired ganglion is called
ganglion impar
list the splanchnics
greater, lesser, least
Splanchnics synapse at the chain ganglion?
No. they pass through the symp chain ganglion
Are splanchnic nerves pre or post-ganglionic?
pre-ganglionic
Do you find intermediate lateral horn (IML) at L3?
No. Only T1-L2
White rami: entering or exiting sympathetic ganglion?
White in
Gray out
is there a symp ganglion in head?
no.
Tearing up
parasympathetic
symp in the face
dilator pupillae, tarsal muscle of eyelid, sweating of face
ptosis
droooping eyelid
horners syndrome
ptosis, miosis, anhidrosis
What do parasymp fiers do to eye
round up lens and constrict pupil
in between internal jugular and common carotid is…
CN X
CN VII goes through which 2 ganglion?
pterygopalatine ganglion (goes to lacrimal gland, hitching a ride with CN V, and also nasal mucosa)
submandibular gland
pneumonic for otic ganglion
GLOAP
How do the branches of CN VII get to submandibular?
runs with V3…flesh this out more
name the 4 parasymp ganglion
CPOS
CN III uses ciliary ganglion
CN VII uses pterygo and submandibular
CN IX uses otic ganglion
Which ganglion does the parotid?
Otic ganglion
CN V is a taxi for?
CN III, CN IX, and VII (GVE components)
note: CN V has no GVE components itself
How many petrosal nerves are there?
Greater, deep, lesser
Symp fibers in deep petrosal nerve originate from
chain ganglion. Don’t synaps at pterygopalatine ganglion
Lacrimal nerve is a branch of
CN V1 (sensation of the gland)
CN VII is the one that makes the lacrimal gland cry
Do parasympathetics (GVE) round up, or narrow, the lens?
Round up
note: they also constrict the pupil
Lens is stuck round, and pupil is small. What’s wrong?
Parasympathetics are dominating here. Maybe the sympathetics are knocked out.
Name a muscle in the eye that has sympathetic innervation.
Tarsal muscle (eyelid)
Does the nerve that innervates the tarsal muscle synapse at the ciliary ganglion?
No! The tarsal muscle has SYMPATHETIC innervation, so it’s nerves synapse at the sympathetic chain ganglion.
Is the greater splanchnic nerve sympathetic or parasympathetic?
Sympathetic
Name one gland that sympathetics command (GVE)…
Sweat glands
Remember: hornet’s syndrome
Which of the following are under parasympathetic control: A. Ciliary muscle B. Sphincter pupillae C. Dilator pupillae D. Tarsal muscle
A and B!
High yield.
Name two collateral ganglion where CN VII synapse
Pterygopalatine ganglion
Submandibular ganglion
(note: poopy shoes on your face)
Pair the CPOS ganglia with their respective glands
Ciliary: NONE
Pterygopalatine: lacrimal gland
Otic: parotid
Submandibular: submandib. + sublingual
SVA: TASTE post 1/3 tongue. CN?
CN IX
SVA: TASTE ant 2/3 tongue. CN?
CN VII (corda tympani)
SVE: stylopharyngeous m. CN?
CN IX
What nerve SENSES increased BP at the carotid body?
CN IX.
…signals CN X to slow down heart.
