AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM PHYSIOLOGY Flashcards
ROLE OF ANS
it is an involuntary branch of the efferent division of the PNS
It controls the body’s internal environment in a coordinated manner
control of the ANS
CNS has central control
region regulating ANS output
- medulla and pons in brain stem eg control cardiovascular
- hypothalamus eg hr
- spinal cord eg urination
Two divisions of ANS
Parasympathetic and sympathetic
what is the parasympathetic system
Is involved in non emergencies and function us restorative/maintenance and rest and digest,
Promotes secretions and mobility
What is the sympathetic nervous system
Involved in the emergency situation and allows us to fight or flight
Examples increases cardiac output and pulmonary ventilation etc
Nerve path in the ANS
CNS —– preganglionic nerve —— ganglion —— postganglionic nerve ——- organ
Difference between parasympathetic and sympathetic
origin - pre and post
PSym Preganglionic nerves originated from cranial and sacral while Sum come from the thoracic and lumber regions
Psym preganglionic nerves are long and myelinated while sympathetic preganglionic nerves are short and myelinated
Psym postganglionic nerves are short and unmyelinated while sympathetic postganglionic are long and unmyelinated
2 Neurotransmitters of the ANS
ACh and NA
what do all preganaglionc nerves release
all ANS preganglionic ANS nerves release EACh
What do postganglionic parasympathetic nerves release
ACh
what do postganglionic sympathetic nerves release
NA
What are cholinergic receptors and the types
Bind acetylcholine and the 2 types are nicotinic and muscarinic
Nicotinic receptors
