Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
The entire autonomic nervous system pathway
- brain stem
- hypothalamus
- limbic system
Autonomic nervous system
Main divisions are Sympathetic / Parasympathetic
Sympathetic Nervous system
Emergency
Divided into Pre/Post ganglionic neurons.
Pre: Cell bodies in thoracolumbar spinal cord segments. THey are cholinergic (ACh)
Post: Vertebral ganglia / paravertebral ganglia. They are Adrenergic : Use norepinephrine as NT
Parasympathetic Nervous System
Preganglionic: Cell bodies located in brain stem / sacral region of spinal cord. Cholinergic (ACh)
Postganglionic: Cell bodies located in ganglia near target tissues. Cholinergic
salivary glands
sympathetic stimulates scanty thick, viscous secretion
parasympathetic stimulates profuse, watery secretion
