Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
The division of the nervous system that includes nerves traveling to and from the brain, like a highway
Peripheral nervous system
axons project to ganglia very near or inside effector organs
parasympathetic
Afferent division of the peripheral nervous system that senses information from the environment and sends it to the brain and spinal cord
Sensory nervous system
Cells found throughout our body that sense your environment and send information to your brain and spinal cord
Sensory receptors
Parts of our body that have high concentrations of sensory receptors to sense your environment, like your eyes, ears, hands, nose and mouth
Sensory organs
The ANS regulates
1) heart rate
2) Blood Pressure
3) digestion
4) urination
a substance that binds to and activates a receptor
agonist
Neurons that carry outgoing information from the CNS along motor neurons to an effector
Motor neurons
Neurons that carry incoming information from the sense receptors to the central nervous system.
sensory neuron
distal end of a sensory neuron that responds to a stimulus
receptor
involuntary. smooth muscle control. management of the heart and blood pressure, control of the glands and digestive system, and activation of the skeletal muscles
autonomic reflexes
the physiological effects of the Parasympathetic division of the Autonomic Nervous System
rest-and-digest
an emotional and physiological reaction to an emergency that increases readiness for action by the sympathetic nervous system
fight-or-flight response
autonomic nerves that influence bodily functions involuntarily in times of stress
sympathetic nerves
‘Rest and digest’ division of the autonomic nervous system that conserves and restores the body’s energy during times of rest and digesting of food.
Parasympathetic nervous system
‘Fight or flight’ division of the autonomic nervous system that increases alertness and metabolic activities in order to prepare the body for emergency situations.
sympathetic nervous system
A subdivision of the peripheral nervous system. Controls involuntary activity of visceral muscles and internal organs and glands.
autonomic nervous system
the division of the peripheral nervous system that controls the body’s skeletal muscles
somatic nervous system
where does the brain stem become the spinal cord?
at the foramen magnum
What are the subdivisions of the ANS
1) Sympathetic Nervous System
2) Parasympathetic Nervous System
