Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Outline the components of the peripheral nervous system
- Receptors.
2. Effectors.
Give the function of PNS receptors
Send info to the CNS.
Give the function of PNS effectors
Bring about changes determined by the CNS.
Describe the somatic nervous system
- Voluntary control.
- Innervation of skeletal muscle.
- Controlled by cerebrum of brain.
Describe the autonomic nervous system
- Involuntary control.
- Routine adjustments to physiological systems.
- Control from the hypothalamus, the pons and the medulla oblongata.
What are the homeostatic centres of the brain?
- Hypothalamus.
- The pons.
- Medulla oblongata.
What are the effector organs of the autonomic nervous system?
- Smooth & cardiac muscle.
- Endocrine glands.
- Cardiac tissue.
Which division of the motor nervous system involves synapses, the somatic or autonomic?
Autonomic, synapses occur between preganglionic and postganglionic neurons at ganglia.
What are ganglia?
Clusters of nerve cell bodies where synapses occur.
Which division of the autonomic nervous system has long preganglionic nerves?
Parasympathetic division.
Which division of the autonomic nervous system has short preganglionic nerves?
Sympathetic division.
Where are postganglionic nerves located in the parasympathetic division?
Close to (i.e. in wall of) effector organs.
Where are postganglionic nerves located in the sympathetic division?
Close to the spinal cord.
Where do sympathetic nerves emerge from?
Thoracic and lumber regions of the spinal cord.
Where do parasympathetic nerves emerge from?
The brainstem & sacral regions of the spinal cord.
