autonomic nervous system Flashcards
what does autonomic mean ?
involuntary
what is the autonomic nervous system (ANS) ?
nervous system concerned with the control of the cardiac cycle , ventilation, bladder, eyes, digestive system
ANS involved in controlling
smooth muscle and glands
what are the divisions of the ANS
sympathetic and parasympathetic (rest and digest)
effects of sympathetic system
shutdown of non-essential systems
heart inotropy (stronger contractions) and chronotropy (faster heart rate)
vasoconstriction in gut
vasodilation in skeletal muscle
sensory awareness increases
compare the transduction of impulses through somatic vs autonomic pathways
compare the types of neurone in sympathetic and parasympathetic neurones
name the vertebrae that the preganglionic fibres of the sympathetic \ns emerge from
T1-L2
name the cranial nerves and their end destinations
III oculomotor = eye
VII facial = lacrimal/salivary glands
IX glossopharyngeal = salivary glands
X vagus = heart lungs and upper GI tract
name the end destinations of the sacral nerve
lower GI tract
bladder
genitalia
what neurotransmitter is used by the parasympathetic NS ?
ACh used by the pre-ganglionic neuron via a nAChR
ACh also used by the post-ganglionic neuron via a mAChR
what are mAChRs?
Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, or mAChRs, are acetylcholine receptors that form G protein-coupled receptor complexes in the cell membranes
main end-receptor stimulated by acetylcholine released from postganglionic fibers in the parasympathetic nervous system.
