Autonomic Flashcards
Ciliary ganglion
Location: lateral to optic n.
Parasymp. fibers: CNIII, its inferior division
Symp. fibers: internal carotid plexus
Distribution: ciliary mm, sphincter pupillae
Otic ganglion
Location: below foramen rotundum, sits behind V3
Parasymp. fibers: tympanic branch of CN IX and lesser petrosal n.
Symp. fibers: plexus of middle meningeal artery
Distribution: parotid gland
Pterygopalatine ganglion
Location: pterygopalatine fossa
Parasymp. fibers: facial n (GREATER PETROSAL N./n. of pterygoid canal)
Symp. fiber: internal carotid plexus
Distribution: lacrimal, nasal, and palate glands
Submandibular ganglion
Location: hyoglossus m.
Parasymp. fibers: facial n. (CORDA TYMPANI) and lingual n.
Symp. fibers: plexus of facial a.
Distribution: submandibular glands, sublingual glands
Horner’s syndrome
Interruption in sympathetic trunk (cut or Pancoast tumor)
Miosis - constricted pupil (b/c of sphincter pupillae)
Ptosis - droopy eyelid (b/c of tarsal m.)
Anhidrosis - no sweating
*effects seen on same side as insult
CN III parasympathetic function
GVE
come in via CILIARY GANGLION
Sphincter pupillae m. = pupil constriction, miosis
Ciliary m. = accom/focusing, fat lens
CN VII parasympathetic function
GVE parasympathetic via
- Greater petrosal nerve --> pterygopalatine ganglion --> lacrimal gland **TEARS - Chorda tympani --> submandibular ganglion --> submandibular/sublingual glands **DROOL
*Corda tympani hitches ride on lingual n. that is going to tongue for GVA, corda tympani is also getting SVA taste from anterior 2/3rds of tongue
CN IX
GVE fcn is just parotid gland stimulation
- GLOAP*
- Glossopharyngeal n. –> Lesser petrosal n. –> Otic ganglion –> auriculotemporal n. –> Parotid gland
Sacral cord
S2, 3, 4 keeps the junk off the floor
Pelvic splachnics - pee, poop, point
PARASYMPATHETIC ACTIVITY
