Automotive - Suspension Systems Flashcards
Name three types of springs used in suspension systems
Coil spring, leaf spring, torsion spring
Identify the component used to stop excessive travel of the suspension system
The bump stop
How are bearing cups removed?
Use a hammer and drift to tap them from the hub
What problem could occur if a rear spring was fitted incorrectly
Rear axle would be out of alignment, and would cause steerintg problems/tyre wear
what components need to be considered when a strut is being removed?
Arms and linkages, steering parts, steering knuckle, wheel hubs, springs, mounts
What type of bearing is a unitised bearing?
Has double row of rollers or balls that are not adjustable
If more air is injected into the air cylinder, what happens to the vehicle height?
Vehicle height will increase
What is the basic principle of a shock absorber?
Slowing of movement caused by forcing oil through a restricted passage/valve
What is trorsion-bar suspension?
Torsion bar acts a a spring-spring action produced by twist effect of long steel bar.
What is a McPerson Strut
Independent suspension incorporating a vertical shock absorber in conjunction with a coil spring
What is a Constant deflection rate?
Spring with a uniform pitch and uniform rod diameter will have a constant deflection rate
Variable deflection rate
varying the shape, rod diameter and pitch of the coils, will give a variable deflection rate
