Autoimmune Disease Flashcards
Physiology of Autoimmunity Prevention.
During B/T cell Development, there is usually a process of selection whereby cells reactive to self antigens are eliminated or kept in check (self-tolerance).
Aetiology of Autoimmunity.
- Breakdown of mechanisms that maintain self-tolerance = activation of self-reactive clones of B/T cells.
- Generation of autoantibodies and/or cell-mediated responses to self-antigens.
What is Autoimmune Disease?
Humoral and/or Cell-Mediated Responses to self-antigens associated with pathological changes.
Investigation of Autoimmune Serology.
Identification and measurement of serum autoantibodies for diagnostic purposes e.g. ANA.
