Autoflight Flashcards
The Autoflight system consists of the:
Flight directors, the auto throttle & the auto pilots
Flight Directors & Auto throttle can be used in ?
All phases of flight
When you engage the auto pilot, you engage all …….. auto pilots
3
The auto flight system through the….
Mode control panel (MCP)
Auto flight modes are displayed as ?
FMA’s on top of the PFD
What are the two auto flight modes?
LNAV & VNAV
When using LNAV & VNAV, the FMC & the auto flight system will fly the most ………………… flight profile from climb through descent to your IAF.
Economical
‘FLT DIR’ annunciates when the FD is on & the AP is ………….
Not engaged
FMA order
A/T, roll modes, pitch modes
Is there an annunciation for the auto throttle armed?
No, just the position of the A/T Arm switches on the MCP
What does the bank limit switch do?
In auto, the bank limit varies between 15 & 25 degrees depending on airspeed.
How do you engage the A/T & AP/FD system in either t/o mode or GA Mode?
Pushing either TO/GA switch
The TO/GA switches tell the auto flight system to engage…..
The A/T, roll & pitch in the TO/GA mode
When you’ve advanced the thrust levers to 55% N1 & pushed the TO/GA switch to engage the A/T for t/o, the
A/T engages in …………
THR REF to advance the thrust levers to t/o thrust (TO, TO1, TO2 as selected)
With thrust reference engaged, moving the thrust levers req’s a ………….. overriding force of the auto throttle servos.
Constant.
As soon as the thrust levers are released, the A/T positions the. Back to the selected limit.
At …….. knots, the A/T annunciation changes to ………..
80 knots, HOLD
With HOLD annunciated, the A/T servos are ………….. The thrust levers can now be …………… positioned without interference from the A/T
Inhibited, manually
After lift off, the Flight Director (AFDS) commands a pitch attitude to maintain a target speed …………
V2 + 15 or the airspeed at rotation + 15, whichever is higher, up to a maximum of V2 + 25
If the target speed exceeded for more than 5 seconds - Target speed adjusted to new speed not to exceed V2 + 25. (Selected speed & speed bug remain at V2)
With LNAV armed, it activates when the airplane is above ………ft radio altitude & within ……… nm of, or on an intercept heading to & approaching, the active route leg
50 ft radio altitude,
2.5 nm
LNAV mode gives ……….. commands to fly the flight plan route
Roll
With VNAV armed, it engages at ……….. ft above the runway elevation
400 ft
When VNAV engages what happens to the IAS/MACH window? Indicating what?
The IAS MACH windows blanks, indicating the FMC is now controlling airspeed.
Climb scenario - With the selection of FLCH & THR annunciated, the A/T sets thrust based on the req’d altitude change. The A/T will attempt to make the change in …… mins while maintaining the MCP speed
2 mins
When THR appears as the A/T annunciation, thrust is controlling …………..
When SPD appears with the pitch annunciation, ……….. controls airspeed, so airplane pitch is adjusted to maintain the speed selected in the ………. window.
Vertical speed
Pitch
IAS/Mach
For descent in FLCH mode, the A/T mode first changes to …….. & adjusts power to get a ….. min descent.
Once the A/T’s have set the descent rate they enter the …….. mode. The pilot can adjust power to change the ROD.
THR
2 min
HOLD
A/T’s will change from HOLD to another A/T mode when there is an automatic change in the ……….. such as capturing an altitude or, ……………..
Pitch mode, when selecting another pitch mode e.g VS
If the AP & both FD switches are turned off the A/T mode will be ……….
Speed (SPD)
Anytime the A/T is in the HOLD mode, the A/T servos are inhibited & ………………..
The pilot can set the thrust levers manually
HOLD can occur automatically in descent, but NOT in climb unless in …………… & thrust levers are moved to idle
FLCH SPD
An altitude alert occurs when within ……. feet of the MCP altitude
900 ft
After level off, an altitude deviation alert occurs ……… ft away from the MCP altitude
200 ft
An altitude deviation alert clears when either:
The airplane returns to within 200 ft of the selected altitude or, descends more than 900 ft from the selected altitude
When approaching the MCP altitude, altitude automatically engages, the
A/T engages in ……. & now controls airspeed
SPD
The annunciation, SPD, indicates what?
Which mode is controlling airspeed
What happens if ‘ALT HOLD’ is pushed?
The a/c initiated a level off to the altitude when the HOLD switch was pushed.
How do you engage the heading select?
By pushing the heading select switch .
Once the track select or heading select is engaged, turning the heading selector to a new heading turns the
a/c ?
In the direction the selector knob was turned.
If you push the heading/track HOLD switch what happens?
The current heading/track is maintained
The BANK LIMIT selector only works on …………… modes
Heading & track select modes
How do you disconnect the auto throttle?
- Position the A/T arm switches to OFF or,
- Push an A/T disconnect switch on the thrust levers (1 on either side).
Either switch disengaged both servos
If disconnected by the A/T arm switches, the A/T is no longer armed & ………………
If disconnected by the A/T disconnect switch, the A/T remains …………
None of the A/T modes are available.
Armed. Pushing FLCH, VNAV or TO/GA engages the A/T or, by pushing the auto throttle engage switch engages in the mode appropriate to the currently engaged pitch mode.
