Auto Exam Review Flashcards
What are the three characteristics of carbon monoxide
Colourless
Tasteless
Odourless
What are the three steps in treating someone who is suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning?
Take them outside
Call 911
Keep conscious or perform cpr if needed
What causes carbon monoxide?
Incomplete combustion (oil, gases, running a car)
How can you reduce the buildup of carbon monoxide in the shop?
Turn on vents
Open the doors
Run car outside
Turn cars off
List the five dangers of dealing with compressed air
Ears- rupture eardrums
Eyes- go blind
Butt- explode insides (bowels, intestines)
Mouth- rupture lungs
Skin- bloodstream, air bubbles to brain can cause stroke
What is the air pressure in the shop?
100 PSI
Name the 4 classes of fires and provide an example for the first three
Class A- Ordinary Combustibles: wood, fabric, paper
Class B- Flammable liquids/gases: gasoline, oil
Class C- Electrical: wires, cords
Class D- combustible metal
Where is the typical location of a fire extinguisher in most shops, including ours?
Near the door exits
What does WHMIS stand for
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What is the procedure to deal with a fluid spill
Pour absorb all on fluid
Wait at least 10 minutes
Sweep up
What type of PPE must be wen when using the bench grinder
Safety glasses
What is not a good tip for dressing to work in the shop
Make sure your jewelry is tight and fits well
What colour are the emergency shut off buttons
Red
Where is the only place that flammable liquids are to be stored
In the yellow fire proof cabinet
When is it not okay to go under a vehicle
When it has been raised up on a floor jack
How would you unplug an electrical word from a wall outlet
Firmly grip the plug and pull it straight out
What is the only item that should be left on the floor
Absorb all
What colour is clean oil, dirty oil? Why does it change colour?
Clean oil is yellow clear or orange
Dirty oil is black or dark brown. This is because as the oil cycles through the engine, it collects contaminants and particles over time
What does SAE stand for?
Society of Automotive Engineers
Developed a numerical code system for grading oils based on viscosity
What is the typical colour of ethylene glycol? What colour is dexcool and which one usually lasts longer?
Ethylene glycol is green, dexcool is orange. Dexcool would last longer as it usually lasts 5 years, while ethylene glycol lasts for 2 years
Write out a step by step procedure for checking the automatic transmission fluid on a car with automatic transmission
First start the engine and place it in neutral, level the car, keep it running and hot. There is a dipstick like oil and you pull the stick out and check if it reaches the indicated mark
What is brake fluids purpose?
Brake fluid multiplies and amplifies force
What does TDC stand for
Top Dead Center- point in which the piston is at the absolute top of its stroke
What does BDC stand for
Bottom Dead Center- bottom most position of the piston inside the cylinder
How many piston rings are there on the piston?
Most pistons have at least two piston rings, but automotive pistons usually have three rings per cylinder
Which piston rings are located closer to the top of the piston
The two upper rings are called compression rings, seals combustion chamber gas
The bottom are oil control rings that lubricates the cylinder wall and prevent oil from leaking
Which valve is bigger
Intake valves are bigger
The crank shift changes…
The reciprocating (up and down) motion of the pistons into rotations motion
The camshafts main job is to…
To open and close both the intake and exhaust valves
The cylinder head is…
At the top of the engine and seals up the top of the cylinder
The wrist pin allows the piston to
Swing on the connection rod
Cylinder bore is the…
Diameter of the cylinder
What are the four strokes in order
Intake
Compression
Power
Exhaust
What are the parts of an engine (label)
Camshaft Cooling water Spark plug Valves Piston Connecting rod Crankshaft
