Gertrude Simmons, Zitkala-Ša when she was older, which means “Red Bird”. She was born on the Yankton Reserve which is now South Dakota, and she is part of the Sioux cultural group.he expressed her voice within an American literary and media culture.
Sui Sin Far
Edith Maude Eaton, woman of mixed race (Chinese and white) who was born in England but raised in Montreal. Many of the stories she tells take place in the 1890s. The setting of these stories are Seattle and Los Angeles. She hoped to represent people living in Chinese communities in the U.S. with dignity and humanity. She had no doubt that other Asian people would read her stories, the nature of her publishing the stories was meant for white people.
Walt Whitman
He was one of the first “free verse” poets. Whitman created the image of the writer as an individualistic rebel and poets like Ezra Pound tend to define themselves in opposition to Whitman.
Edgar Allen Poe
Poe was fascinated with math and numbers; his work shows how the genre emerged from gothic and sensation fiction. Dupin’s tales are considered among the first examples of detective fiction.
William Wells Brown
William Wells Brown was a well-known abolitionist and civil rights activist. He escaped fromslavery in 1834.

The novel reflect Alcotts life, Jo represents her. She emphasized the importance of individuality. Very much a feminist.
