Tragedy
A drama where the protagonist experiences downfall due to a tragic flaw or external circumstances.
Characterization
The process of developing and portraying characters in a story.
Soliloquy
A speech by a character alone on stage, revealing their inner thoughts and feelings.
Monologue
A long speech by one character, often in the presence of others.
Dramatic Irony
When the audience knows something the characters don’t, creating tension or humor.
Foreshadowing

Act 1.3
The witches, 3 prophecy - King Macbeth and Banqou’s children, Macbeth = Thane
of Cawdor. Seconds later Angus and Ross tell Macbeth he is Thane of Cawdor. OMG WITCHES ARE TRUE!
Act 1.5
Lady Macbeth reads the letter and decided Duncan must be killed by Macbeth. Macbeth arrived and it is informed of this. “Thicken her blood (METAPHOR) to stop her from feeling pity, so that no human kindness will stop her from carrying out her terrible plan.”
Act 1.7
Macbeth thinks of consequences if he kills, giving up his soul in the afterlife. He only is doing this for his ambition. He tells Lady Macbeth he won’t kill but then is mocked by her. The detailed plan is then discussed
“Have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, And dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you Have done to this.” Lady Macbeth saying if she was in this position she would even kill her child to achieve what she wants. Ambition using metaphor and violent image.
Act 2.1
Macbeth and Banqou talk about the witches Banqou states things have came true. Macbeth claims he hadn’t thought about it since. Macbeth hallucinates a dagger. Bell rings, time to kill Duncan.
Soliloquy debating to do this or not interrupted by a bell (symbolism of bed time)
Act 2.2
Ducan’s death. Lady Macbeth drugs servants and is confident the kill will be successful. Macbeth kills comes back with a horrified face, Lady Macbeth notices daggers calls him a coward and demands him to wash his hands while she places the daggers.
“That which hath made them drunk hath made me bold; What hath quenched them hath given me fire. Hark, peace.” Contrast between Lady Macbeth and gaurds. Wine did this wine did this to me. Juxtaposing!
Act 3.1
Banqou is suspicious, Macbeth sees Banqou as a threat as his children will be king too. He invited them to a dinner and murderers are prepared to kill them. THEY FAIL!
“To be king is nothing, but to be securely stationed in a position of power is much better.” it isn’t enough to be king, its enough to be secure and not be scare of someone taking it away. Ambivalence, feeling about specific

Macbeth finds out Banqou has been killed but Fleance escaped, causing worry as the threat of his thrones is still out there. He sees Banqou’s ghost on his chair, he goes crazy. Lady Macbeth says he’s ill.
Act 4.1
The witches meet up with Macbeth to sabotage him. 1. Floating head - beware Macduff.
Bloody child - no man born of a woman will harm him. Crowned child never be defeated until trees marches to his castle.
Act 5.1
A doctor and a gentlewoman watch Lady Macbeth sleep walks and talks. She mentions the murders of Duncan, Banquo and Lady
Macduff. Blood on her hands.
Act 5.5
Macbeth prepares the castle to defend against the attack. His servant tells him that Lady Macbeth has taken her own life. Macbeth talks bitterly about the nature of life. A messenger tells Macbeth that Birnam Wood is moving towards the castle. Macbeth recalls the prophecy and says that he is ready to die.
