Authenticity Flashcards
Does a work said to be by someone else lose value once leant it’s a fake??
Reply 1 forgeries
The work hasn’t changed perceptually so it’s snobbery to treat it different
REPLY 2 FORGERIES
Maybe we were wrong in thinking it was done by someone else
1 due to psychology as we wanted to find a piece done by them
2 may be unable to detach ourselves from current stylistic preferences (looked right)
REPLT 3 forgeries
The forgery must be skilful so we can not justify inferiority on perceptual ground
BUT
1 van Meegren distorted our view of Vermeer
2 forgery achievements are not the same as original
Are forgeries inferior ?
Yes as they distort our view of history not due to snobbery
Does a perceptually indistinguishable copy possess an inferior aesthetic ?
Copy reply 1
Original may have a certain aura
(Touched by artist)
BUT
this can’t justify a superiority as it is merely talismanic and doesn’t effect the work itself
Copy reply 2
The original brought something new into existence so nothing can really be a perfect copy
BUT
The copy wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t for the original so the copy has value
Are copies inferior?
No because they can be on par with the original as they both have merits
Outline differences between painting and photo
1 a painting is of x if it looks like x
2 a photo is of x if x was in front of the lens
1 a painting is not counterfactually dependent on the visible world
2 a photo is counterfactually depended on the visible world
Specific case for variants?
By copying photos painting lend them an atmosphere and borrow a detached objectivity
Both copied and originals maintain an aesthetic significance
Lessons from music
A variation differs form a performance - in music it always includes the original but not in paintings
Result - a variation boils down to the type of interpretation despite being a copy it still stands on its own (both copy and original mutually enhanced )
Are variants less significant than originals?
No, it’s an interpretation and they enhance each other , there’s no redundancy (photo and painting eg)
