Q

REPLY 2 FORGERIES

A

Maybe we were wrong in thinking it was done by someone else

1 due to psychology as we wanted to find a piece done by them
2 may be unable to detach ourselves from current stylistic preferences (looked right)

Q

REPLT 3 forgeries

A

The forgery must be skilful so we can not justify inferiority on perceptual ground

BUT
1 van Meegren distorted our view of Vermeer

Q

Does a perceptually indistinguishable copy possess an inferior aesthetic ?

Copy reply 1

A

Original may have a certain aura
(Touched by artist)

BUT

this can’t justify a superiority as it is merely talismanic and doesn’t effect the work itself

Q

Copy reply 2

A

The original brought something new into existence so nothing can really be a perfect copy

BUT

The copy wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t for the original so the copy has value

Q

Lessons from music

A

A variation differs form a performance - in music it always includes the original but not in paintings

Result - a variation boils down to the type of interpretation despite being a copy it still stands on its own (both copy and original mutually enhanced )
