What is the name of the higher position roles in each level of government?
Local- mayor
State- premier
Federal- prime minister
What is local responsible for?
Rubbish collection, street lights, child care, town planning
What is the state responsible for?
Hospitals, emergency services, housing
What is federal responsible for?
Pensions, immigration, passports
What is democracy?
Form of government which the power comes from the people
What is republicanism
Form of government is in opposition to the monarchy
What is a constitution?
A document that sets out how a body or country will be governed
What is a federation?
A body formed when seperate contrives or states agree to unite
What is the senate and what is the main purpose?
The upper house of a federal or state parliament. It’s main job is to act as a ‘house of review’
How many senators are there representing each state?
12 senators per state, 76 in total.
What are Australian political parties?
Groups that band together because they share the same views about issues they think are important.

What is preferential voting
When voters decide on what candidates they want most but also the order that they prefer the other candidates.
What is the house of rep and how many members are elected
The lower house and 150 members elected each year
