Australian Renewable Resources Flashcards
What is a RENEWABLE resource?
Can be replenished naturally within human timeframes.
What is a NON-RENEWABLE resource?
Cannot be replenished within any reasonable timeframe.
Examples of RENEWABLE resources:
-Solar energy
-Cotton
-Freshwater
-Oxygen
-Wood
Examples of NON-RENEWABLE resources:
-Plastic
-Gasoline
-Coal
-Diesel
What is AGRICULTURE?
Practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for growing crops and the rearing of animals to produce; food, wool etc.
Biggest Foods derived from terrestrial resources:
-WAGYU BEEF - Ranches in QLD
-STANTHORPE APPLES - South East QLD
-BANANAS - Coffs Harbour (NSW) + QLD
-WHEAT - NSW, WA, SA, VIC, QLD
What is Australia’s most common agricultural land use?
Grazing
Primary sources of aquatic products:
-TASMANIAN SALMON - Tasmania
-OYSTERS - Sydney Rock Oysters
-PEARLS - Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm
-WILD CAUGHT FISH - Syd Fish Markets
What is a DAM
Artificial, man-made to collect & store rainfall
What is the MURRAY DARLING BASIN?
The biggest & most intensely used water supply.
What is the MURRAY DARLING BASIN used for?
-Irrigation
-Recreation
-Domestic use & must maintain environmental flows
Types of Renewable Energy:
-Solar
-Wind
-Tidal
-Hydroelectricity
ADVANTAGES of SOLAR Energy:
-Emission-free
-Doesn’t require a turbine or generator
-Cost is decreasing
-Battery technology is constantly improving
DISADVANTAGES of SOLAR Energy:
-Needs favourable conditions
-Most expensive
-Considered un-aesthetic
ADVANTAGES of WIND Energy:
-Offshore farms can often be more efficient & don’t interact with humans.
-Emission-free (No CO2)
