NGOs that focus on assisting groups within this country and others that provide aid to overseas countries. Some do both

  • funding from Australian government and donation
  • Aid focus’ on smaller projects that are more focused and involve the community.

World Vision

A

Works in partnership with other organisations such as UN agencies.

DO?:
- Community development: working with communities to find solutions to issues with malnutrition, unemployment, low literacy etc.

  • Humanitarian and emergency relief: Assist countries affected by war. conflict, flood, drought and natural disaster.

-Tackling injustice through policy change and education:
Engages Govt., institutions and communities to address causes of poverty through training and promotion of human right.

Australian red cross

A
  • Branch of British red cross.
  • Part of the international red cross and red crescent movement.
  • Aims to improve the lives of vulnerable people in Australia and internationally by mobilising power of humanity

DO?:
- Supplying aid is reducing impact of disaster: Volunteers help restore safe water facilities and rebuild homes that had been destroyed in natural disasters such as floods.

  • Meeting Humanitarian needs in a crisis: Contribute to emergency relief. Eg. nurses – aid– decent living– decreases illness.

Oxfam Australia

A
  • Formed from merging Community Aid Abroad and Australian Freedom from Hunger campaign.
  • It is now one of Australia’s largest international developed organisations.

Vision:
World without poverty, where people can influence decisions that affect their lives, enjoy their rights. Creation of a world which everyone is equal.

Purpose:
People have the right to; be heard, have an identity, access essential services.

DO?:
- responding to emergencies: humanitarian aid such as water & sanitation

  • campaigning for a more just world: discovering the root cause of poverty and injustice.
  • Involving the Australian community: Events such as Oxfam 100Km walk, where funding assists in fighting poverty and injustice.
  • Oxfam Australia shops.: Sales of hand craft items from developing countries (India, Peru) to support people living in poverty and injustice.
