Australian Aid & NGO’s Flashcards
what is AIDS?
ASSISTANCE GIVEN TO COUNTRIES OR COMMUNITIES IN THE
EVENT OF A CRISIS OR FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF LONG
TERM SUSTAINABLE IMPROVEMENTS
what are the three types of AIDS?
EMERGENCY/ HUMANITARIAN AID. BILATERAL AID AMD MULTILATERAL AID
what is emergency/ humanitarian aid?
The rapid assistance given to people or countries in immediate
distress to relieve suffering, during and after emergencies such as
wars and natural disasters for example floods, tsunamis or
earthquakes.
- PROVISION OF BASIC ASSISTANCE, RAPID ASSISTANCE
what is bilateral aid?
Where aid is given by one country directly to another country.
* Support large infrastructure projects
* Fund small community-based projects such as immunization
programs
* Building schools and providing education programs
what is multilateral aid?
Where aid is provided through an international organization, such as the World Bank, United Nations, or World Health Organization. Multilateral aid combines donations from several countries and then distributes them to the recipients.
* Addressing global issues such as global warming, control of diseases such as COVID-19, and major infrastructure projects such as roads and sanitation systems
AD AND DIS- emergency
AD: prevent conditions associated with water contamination such as cholera spreading, starvation and poor living conditions.
DIS: Emergency aid does not address the underlying causes of poverty
AD AND DIS- bilateral
AD: Essential infrastructure
reduces spread of illnesses
and injuries. It also increases
job opportunities and a
purpose in life.
DIS: This type of aid sometimes attracts criticism, as the goods and services may be provided by companies from the donating country, thereby favouring the economy of that country.
AD AND DIS- multilateral
AD: Multilateral aid has the advantage of being less tied to
the political interests of individual donor countries
and allows for the efficient pooling of resources to
address global issues that require a global approach.
DIS: some of the funds provided to
multilateral agencies must be spent by the agency itself for administrative
purposes.
AD AND DIS- NGO
AD: focuses on small communities target specific needs
DIS: can lack funding
what is NGO?
NGOs take different approaches to aid, which include specific projects or programs, emergency aid,
volunteering, education, and development. The aid provided by NGOs often focuses on communities.
* Non profit organization/work.
* Works separate from the national government.
