What is gentrification?
Gentrification is the process of run down inner urban properties getting purchased and refurbished by mid to high income earners.
Whilst this improves property values, it often displaces lower income families and small businesses
What is urban decay?
Urban decay is a process in which a previously functioning city, or city area, falls into disrepair and disuse. It is often characterised by abandoned buildings, filth, and social problems and a result of poor planning and management of the area.
What is urban consolidation?
Urban consolidation is the process that increases/maintains population densities and slow urban sprawl by expanding upwards as high rise development.

What is urban renewal?
Urban renewal is the upgrading of parts of a city through redevelopment it is a strategy to increase population density
What is urban settlement?
Larger permanent settlement with a built up area and a relatively dense population compared to it’s hinterlands.
What is urban sprawl?
The migration of a population from populated towns and cities to low density residential development over more and more rural land e.g. Sydney CBD expanding to Western Sydney
What are some benefits of urban sprawl?
More space
Access to transport and facilities
Cheaper
What are some issues with urban sprawl?
Stress on the environment
Decreased farmland leads to less food
Long transport
What are the causes of urbanisation in Australia?
High rates of immigration since the 20th century, which were generally to coastal, urban areas as they have the most natural resources.
