Bronchial
Over sternum
Expiration longer and louder than inspiration c a pause before inhalation
Bronchovesicular
1, 2 ICS between the scapulae
Inspiration and expiration are equal length
Tracheal
Over trachea
Expiration longer than inspiration and very loud - not a typical auscultation site
Crackles (rales)
Adventitious
Loud and low-pitched
Discontinuous and explosive sounds
Sounds like rubbing a piece of hair between two fingers
Heard on INSpiration
Alveoli opening and closing abnormally (underinflated)
Pleural effusion
Wheezing (rhonci)
Continuous and high-pitched Constricted airways Musical sounding Heard on expiration OR inspiration Obstruction or asthma
Egophony
Transmitted voice sound
“E” heard as “A” when spoken by Pt.
Consolidated lung tissue - air not moving well (something denser than air in that part of the lung)
Whispered pectoriloquy
Transmitted voice sound
Whisper “1-2-3” heard clearly during auscultation
Consolidated lung tissue
High-pitched
Heard anywhere A/P where consolidation is
Atelectasis
