what is the fall?
Adam and eve being punished
what where the punishments God gave at the fall?
God curses the serpent and condemns him to crawl on the ground and be the enemy of people. As a consequence, God punishes the woman by saying that childbirth will be painful and that she will be ruled over by her husband and she will desire him. God also punishes the man by saying that he will have to work hard to produce crops all his life. God banished Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden and placed an angel to guard the garden.
Augustine’s beliefs on the fall
He believed that the fall was a turning point for humanity. For example, he believes that it is useful as it explains things, such as dominance of me, the significance of lust and the broken relationship with God. As well as this, it challenges God’s nature; e.g, why God would create a world with imbalance, evil and suffering in it.
Augustine’s views on men and women
he believed that they are equal however men are just more dominant which is why they rule the home

what is Gnosticism?
a group of religions that were dualist (believed body and soul were separate) and thought you should free the soul from the trap of the body.

someone’s whose writing’s try to cover all of Christianity
what is Cupiditas?
the love of impermanent earthly things and selfish needs
what is Caritas?
the generous love of others an expression of the will of God as eternal law
what did Augustine say that Grace is?
- the love and mercy of God
- A quality of God that is capable of reaching someone’s heart
- Encourages the soul to recognise when it has offended God
- Encourage the soul to praise God
- Transforms the will so it is capable of obedience to God
- Can overcome human pride
- Calms the soul with forgiveness and hope
