Audio Encoding Flashcards
Sound is S_____ and stored D______
Sound is Sampled and stored Digitally
What is “Analogue”?
analogue audio-Recording audio in a format of continuous vibrations that are analogous to the original sound waves.
What is used to record an analogue signal?
A Microphone
What is an “Analogue signal”?
Pieces of continually changing data
What do analogue signals need to be converted into so that computers can read and store a sound file?
Digital data
What can you use to convert analogue into digital data?
An Analogue to digital converter - These are found in most modern recording devices.
what is sampling?
The process of converting analogue to digital
What does the Analogue to digital converter do to convert the data?
Samples of the amplitude is of the wave are taken at regular intervals.
What limits the samples of amplitude?
The bit rate
What is a bit rate?
the number of bits used per second of audio
What is the bit rate equation?
Bit rate = Sampling Frequency x Sampling Size
kbits/second
What factors can affect the size and quality of sound files?
- Sampling intervals
- Sampling Frequency
- Sample Size
- Bit rate
How can increasing sample frequency affect the size and quality of sound files?
Increasing the sampling frequency means that the analogue recording is sampled more often.
- The sampled sound will be better quality and will more closely match the original recording
- However this will result in a larger file size, and it will increase the number of bits
How can increasing the sampling size affect the size and quality of sound files?
Increasing the sample size means the digital file picks up quieter sounds even if they’re happening at the time as louder sounds.
- This means that the sampled sound will be closer to the quality of the original recording. (higher quality)
- However file size will be larger as the number of bits in the sound file is increased.
Is the digital data continuous or categorical?
categorical
