audio cables and interconnections Flashcards
describe how unbalanced and balanced cables work
unbalanced have one signal/hot/positive core and a shield which is the negative and an earth
balanced has one earth and two cores that are hot/positive and cold/negative, the shield is earthed
how does a balanced cable cancel out noise
the positive and negative cores carry the same noise signal
they are put in phase with each other at the input stage so they combine to form a stronger signal
the noise is now out of phase an cancels out
define serial and parallel communication
what the benefits of serial communication?
serial - when one bit is transmitted at a time along a single data line
parallel - multiple bits can be transferred at the same time along multiple data lines
serial can be better because there is no clock skew issues and serial requires less cables so less space
define synchronous communication
when bits in the data stream are transferred in sync with a clock signal which is sent along with the data
define asynchronous communication
when rate of bit transfer is not constant, can be transferred at random intervals
what does midi stand for
musical instrument digital interface
what does xlr stand for
eXternal line return
what does SCSI stand for and one drawback
small computer standard interface
need for adaptors
what does USB stand for
universal serial bus
what does HDMI stand for
pros and cons
high definition multimedia interface
does not have enough pins for clock signal , connector was designed before the system
good for carrying video
