Audio 2 Flashcards
Refers to excessive bass response, or a peak in the bass response of a recording, playback or sound reinforcement system.
Boomy
A phenomenon that can be sometimes heard when a compressor is used to control a complex program signal, or even a single voice in the presence of ambient noise.
Breathing
An expression that usually describes a large amount of high frequency energy in a recording or playback system, or a sound reinforcement systems
Bright
A signal path to which a number of inputs may be connected for feed to one or more outputs.
Bus
An electronic device which passes AC currents, but blocks DC. Used to store voltages. Made by two metallic surfaces and separated by an insulator
Capacitor
A rotating shaft connected to the motor in a tape recorder that moves the tape at a constant speed across the heads. The tape is pressed against the capstan by a pinch roller.
Capstan
The frequency at which the greatest amount of boost or attenuation (cut) occurs in a peak/dip type equalizer or notch filter.
Center Frequency
Occurs when the capabilities of an amplifier are exceeded. The result is very audible distortion, also visible on an oscilloscope.
Clipping
A technique for recording or sound reinforcement whereby the microphones are placed close to vocalists and instruments.
Close miking
Is the demagnetized game force or field intensity required to reduce the signal on magnetic tape from maximum to zero. Intrinsic
Coercivity
A process whereby the dynamic range of a program material is reduced. Making louder parts quiet and quiet parts louder.
Compression
Decreases gain as the level of the input signal increases to reduce the dynamic range of the program.
Compressor
A unit of measurement for ratios of sound level ,power, voltage, and other quantities
dB
Is an electrical measurement of power. 0dBm=1 milliwatt
dBm
Measurement of voltage 0dBv=0.775 volts
dbV
